You have one hour in the ball pit.

336

u/captainAwesomePants Mar 28 '23

Oh Dashcon. In success, you would have been unremembered, but in failure, you will live forever.

107

u/Phylar Mar 29 '23

Here it is. I was wondering who'd hit upon the original Ball Pit. Still can't believe people actually donated money to someone running around with basically a garbage bag and panic.

If youre thinking fnaf its the last event twitch con i think there was a foam gladiator game but the foam blocks were shit and there wasnt enough so when simeone fell in it broke their back

122

u/kingftheeyesores Mar 29 '23

There was no padding under the foam blocks, just a concrete floor.

57

u/emlgsh Mar 29 '23

Best to just think of concrete as extra-dense foam.

She jumped in the air and kicked both her legs out. Then landed right on her tailbone. the foam pit wasn't very deep. More for falling over not dropping 5 ft on to it.

54

u/Veserius Mar 29 '23 edited Mar 29 '23

The other pit was actually fine apparently. So people who had jumped into the other one then jumped into the unsafe one that was actually technically illegal got hurt.

11

u/gandhinukes Mar 29 '23

I didn't know there were two pits. Just saw the aftermath. Thanks.

6

u/DrMango Mar 29 '23

I might be misremembering this, but I think someone else "fell over" in that same pit and broke or injured their wrist.

Regardless, you tend to fall different if you're expecting some cushion versus hard floor in ways you have little conscious control over. It was a big hazard even without the "gladiator" style events they staged there.

Might become a small developer/ indie showcase at this rate. Several large developers have said they won't be there. https://www.ign.com/articles/rumors-swirl-around-e3s-future-as-sega-even-more-publishers-back-out

275

u/KeyanReid Mar 28 '23

I got to cover it way back when it was a circus. 09 or 10 I think. My favorite part was getting the first crack at Mass Effect 2 before the public got to see the new combat system.

For at least a decade it’s felt like it’s on borrowed time though. It just isn’t the value it used to be. There’s no reason to rush throwaway development for one time use E3 demos in the era of Open Access.

It was an…”interesting” event back in the day though. The mix of professionals, models, and unbathed geeks crammed together into the Staples Center was quite the menagerie.

162

u/lockwolf Mar 28 '23

Being a teenager in the mid-2000s, E3 was the most hype thing. My friends and I would all watch G4’s coverage of the show, try to find whatever we could on random game blogs and wait patiently till whatever we wanted to play hopefully got released.

The last E3 I paid any attention to was 2013 because of the Xbox 1 Vs PS4 showdown. It felt like the last year that had any real reason to pay attention to it

32

u/chluckers Mar 29 '23

Remember when G4/Tech TV started to have Wil Wheaton on all the time? God that was awful. I tried so hard to separate my hatred of Wesley from Wil, but then I just started to hate Wil. Ugh shudder

13

u/LTman86 Mar 29 '23

Question, why the Will Wheaton hate?

The only thing I know is Will seems to be...estranged(?) from the Star Trek community because of...something. I don't really have a full picture about anything so I'm just really curious.

The only thing I know Will from is he plays "Will Wheaton the jerk" on Big Bang Theory, and had celebrity guests on his Geek & Sundry Tabletop games show, where he comes off as a friendly guy.

24

u/chluckers Mar 29 '23

Fair question. For me, the hate is undeserved. He does come off as a friendly, nice, good guy. I have never heard anything to make me think otherwise of him. I have not heard of the estrangement from the cast so maybe there is something there, but I doubt it.

I hated Wesley cause he was just this goody two shoes, dorky, annoying kid. Every scene was made worse by him being in it and every storyline featuring him was a chore to watch.

Wil, the person, is still dorky and has a face that really annoys me. His smile is weird and his mannerisms bug me. There's just something 'off' about him. Again, this is super unfair to him and not nice of me at all. These are superficial things that shouldn't have any bearing in my assessment, but they do. I don't know if you've ever been around someone whose mere presence just annoys you. That's what he does to me through a screen. Not sure if it would be the same in person, but probably.

He has talked about how being a child star was really hard on him and how girls would swoon over him but then he realized it was just his character and status that they liked. I think I remember him saying he didn't really have friends and had a hard time connecting with people. I could be making that part up. Knowing that makes my distaste for him even less palatable to any decent human being, but again, it's how I feel.

It’s getting harder and harder every year to call Devolver indie, in part because indie stands for independent and by definition as a publisher, they can’t be indie. And in part because they’re getting huge, they’re publicly traded, and they’re publishing like 10 games a year at this point

ETA: but I know that indie at this point is more of a vibe than a literal term, and most of their games totally fit the vibe

43

u/i_had_an_apostrophe Mar 28 '23

agree with you but out of curiosity what does "ETA" stand for here

They publish games made by small independent development teams however. They spend their money by taking risks on lesser known teams, but they have an impeccable sense of what games have potential.

They are the A24 of the video game world.

9

u/SexySlowLoris Mar 29 '23

Indie has nothing to do with the publisher. Indie has to do with the developer. Publishers don’t affect the end product that much besides feedback, play testing and distribution (all of which are huge for sales). The developers are still indie because most probably did their games on their own money and time.

10

u/Skwiggelf54 Mar 29 '23

At this point, the indie developers make better games anyway. I'm so fucking tired of buying a game from AAA developers only to find out its half finished and broken. Never had that problem with indie developers.

u/brianbezn Mar 28 '23

Small developers found out e3 was a bad investment before the big guys did.

28

u/DoTheRustle Mar 28 '23

I think PAX covers that niche

26

u/yukichigai Mar 29 '23

Yep. While they're not perfect, PAX's organizers do a good job making sure the convention is actually enjoyable for the average gamer. E3 started started off aimed at industry insiders and the press, and they've never really moved on from that mindset even as attendance shifted more and more towards consumers/gamers. I figured they'd have to make that change eventually if they wanted to the con to continue. Looks like they didn't.

10

u/HowDoIDoFinances Mar 29 '23

The section with the major publishers/developers at PAX is kinda cool. The sections with the indie games at PAX are awesome. Being able to talk directly to the people who have made some of my favorite games is so cool.

→ More replies

20

u/theGarbagemen Mar 29 '23

I went back in like 2014ish and honestly I was a little let down by the whole thing in terms of expecting to see major games there. AAA games were blocked by big walls with giant lines to go see the games and nothing other than the trailer to look at while you waited.

I had tons of fun playing some of the indie / smaller games though! It was cool since they had 1 or 2 entire sections devoted to them with hardly anybody around them. So it was basically like walking through an Arcade filled with brand new games you'd never heard of but were mostly fun. Getting to play Sea of Thieves years before it released is still a core memory me and my brother talk about.

TLDR: This could totally be a thing and the Indie games were already a large part of the convention ever since they opened it up to the public.

u/Iohet Mar 28 '23

Kentia Hall was always the most fun anyways

I don't know what this means but that ball pit gives off an incredibly threatening aura.

1.8k

u/otusasio451 Mar 28 '23

This is a reference to Dashcon. To make a long story short, when Tumblr was experiencing its first big popularity boom, some people got together and decided they could and should make a convention about Tumblr-centric culture, and called it Dashcon (named after the Tumblr home page, or Dashboard). It, uh…it didn’t go well. Poor management, panels pulling out, possible stolen money and an attendance that fell far below poorly thought out expectations, amongst other things.

There was also planned to be a gigantic ball pit there, rumored to be room-sized (pretty sure that was a meme at the time on Tumblr). Instead, uh…it was a kiddie pool with plastic balls in it. Each person only got a limited amount of time. So, at one point, when a panel was cancelled after people had bought tickets for it MONTHS in advance, the organizers decided that instead of refunds, they would provide an equivalent gift: an extra hour in the pit.

People, were, uh…not pleased. Also, I’m pretty sure somebody peed in it at one point. So, yeah, whenever a convention seems to turn towards disaster, you’re probably gonna see the pit rear its ugly head once again.

1.2k

u/TheGreyGuardian Mar 28 '23 Platinum

Not to be confused with the Twitch-con Foam Pit where it was some foam blocks sparsely covering a concrete floor under a sort of gladiator battle platform. A girl landed in there, broke her back, and the resulting medical tests revealed that she was pregnant, but the surgery required would cause a termination of that pregnancy.

549

u/otusasio451 Mar 28 '23

Long story short, if the convention offers a pit of any kind, don’t go into the pit. Bad times.

92

u/Reality_Gamer Mar 28 '23

Mosh pit?

176

u/Incandescent_Lass Mar 28 '23

Not worth it at a convention. They don’t know Mosh etiquette, so they’ll be the kind of people who keep hitting you when you fall down.

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '23

Different streamer broke her ankle “in all possible ways” in the foam pit before the back breaking incident. And they kept the foam pit open. They also had inadequate medical response teams at the venue from what I’ve heard.

Also, the girl that broke her back was also an adult entertainer and so this injury possibly ended her career in that industry. After the injury her OnlyFans was also hacked and she was locked out of it. It’s a massive loss of income for her on top of the physical and mental trauma of breaking your back and having to relearn to walk. She was also swatted on stream a couple months after the injury.

23

u/TheTwistedTeddy Mar 29 '23

The longer I read your comment, the sadder I got:(

25

u/PortraitBird Mar 29 '23

Actually she’s still doing bikini/hot tub streams and gaming. I haven’t looked too much into how her recovery is going but her twitter is still very active! She’s not back to shooting porn yet, but it looks like it’s still in the cards.

I’m sorry my comment made you sad :( she has been having a really rough time though. This thread made me go check out her sfw twitter and she seems to be healing well :)

98

u/SatinwithLatin Mar 28 '23 edited Mar 29 '23

The pit looked deep and filled enough to cannonball into so she did, and unfortunately landed ass-first on the hidden beam. And I mean hidden. It was like people consciously covered it in foam squares.

ETA: I've been corrected, it was just a concrete floor. Must have had a memory blip.

50

u/DelayedEntry Mar 29 '23

I don't recall reading about a beam, just the hard floor under the foam squares (that they walked on to get to the platform).

27

u/snugglezone Mar 29 '23

Yes wtheck is this guy talking about beams lol there're foam blocks covering the floor but it's like a foot deep and then pure concrete slab. That's not a foot of foam mat... It's blocks that got pushed out of the way by her body, leaving her to land on concrete in the worst possible way.

The venue is absolutely beyond dumb for setting that thing up and hopefully paid her out some insane amount.

I always confuse it with a very similar story about Las Pegasus Unicon. It was a my little pony convention, and it was pretty wild, it had a lot of the same issues as you described, and also the fire alarm was pulled at some point due to lack of security, the hosts couldn't afford the hotel and so they stole everyone's money and just ran away, and the voice actors of the show had to do a fundraiser to be able to catch a plane home if I'm correct. Unorganised cons are chaos and I live for it.

42

u/otusasio451 Mar 28 '23

There is a pantheon of failed or disastrous conventions. It includes Dashcon, Las Pegasus Unicon, TwitchCon, and Rainfurrest, at the very least. And perhaps, E3 will soon ascend (descend?) to those notorious and hallowed halls.

14

u/camerakestrel Mar 29 '23

Internet Historian has a hilarious video on this.

9

u/littlebloodmage Mar 29 '23

Little known fact, something similar happened to the MLP fandom a few months prior to Dashcon. Big convention in Las Vegas, planned to have a bunch of big names show up, was an absolute shit show. The organizers ran off with all the money made from the ticket sales and didn't pay the venue, so the hotel charged the attendees who had bought rooms the full rate instead of the events discount. An emergency fundraiser was quickly put together to help cover the costs.

I've always suspected the same organizers were behind DashCon. Too many similarities to be a coincidence.

23

u/Pickled_Kagura Mar 28 '23

I've spent this entire time thinking Dashcon was a brony con.

9

No friggin way haha. That's absolutely ridiculous. I feel like a school dance would have done a better job than this whole ass convention lol.

Oh my God, it's so much smaller than I imagined while trying to image a small ball pit. What the hell would you do in there for an hour 🤣

Apart from the Internet Historian video, there's also the Sarah Z one with even more detail, from someone who was active in that culture at the time.

And yes, that's an almost 1 hour video. To give you an idea of how much of a clusterfuck that was.

I don't know how much large devs fund E3, but I feel like it still has a space to finally let mid level groups shine. With rotations because they don't pump out games the same, I think it could be really cool. show off the next nintendo before it becomes nintendo hypothetically

47

u/FalseAesop Mar 28 '23

E3 was a industry trade show for the purpose of showing off their games to game developers real customers. Commercial Retailers. The goal was to convince stores to give them shelf space, that they had great product that would sell. So stores better order a lot of copies.

But then Pre-Order culture took hold, Stores had better metrics for the hype level of games and how many they should order. Then digital sales started to overtake retail sales.

Retailers stopped caring about E3. It used to be hard as hell to get in, because it wasn't open to the public. Just retailers, partners, investors, and media. But as the first three stopped caring E3 opened its doors to the public.

Developers have better ways than a dead trade show to market to consumers. A Nintendo Direct and a demo drop on their digital store had infinite more reach than competing for space and attention at a convention hall.

E3 doesn't matter anymore.

E3 was good for promoting new games and hardware when companies relied on magazines like EGM and a few big gaming sites like IGN, but once YouTube and other social media took off it became pointless to spend a lot of money to show off your game at the same time that your competitors were doing the same when you could promote your stuff for much less, at your own schedule and without the risk of fuck-ups onstage.

No Nintendo? No go.

Pointless event now publishers learned than YouTube is a thing.

u/BeevsComics Mar 28 '23

Exactly. Streaming has changed how games are being announced.

I would skip the ball pit. This girl I knew as a kid jumped in one at Chucky Cheese and broke out into a full body staph infection.

Wouldn't recommend, it looked rough.

u/Intelligent-Fuel1485 Mar 29 '23

Speaking of Chucky Cheese, the singular ball pit reminded me of your first day in fnaf 6.

Didn’t that actually happen at Dashcon or something?

6

u/HalfCarnage Mar 28 '23

Excuse me but where’s the problem here?

6

u/Phlegmagician Mar 28 '23

They were going to demo the tetrahedron pit but some kid lost his eye.

5

u/EskildDood Mar 28 '23

With how many big devs aren't going, I wouldn't be surprised if it goes full Dashcon

4

u/Omeggos Mar 28 '23

They should just cancel the whole thing at this point. The bug three switching to do their own things was already a fatal blow and now third parties are ditching E3

End of a damn era, but hey, it was (mostly) fun while it lasted

5

u/ArthrogryposisMan Mar 29 '23

OH GOD NOT THE BALL PIT

4

u/darexinfinity Mar 29 '23

I feel like I'm the only one who liked E3. I could spend a week going over all of the presentations on youtube and come across ones I've never search for outside of the convention. Also it felt like you could gather the wide-reaching gaming community for a week and peace out for the rest of the year without missing too much.

I do not trust successors like Play Days, whatever E3 did bad, I believe they'll do much worse.
