YOU PUT SOME RESPECT ON LAKITU’S NAME!!! But also, omg your mom is freaking amazing

u/Stevie22wonder Mar 29 '23 edited Mar 29 '23

Wasn't Lakitu his family's last name? When Mario approaches the castle in 64, they say "Lakitu Bros reporting live" so I assumed that was their family name...

306

u/forkevbot2 Mar 29 '23

Is mario the family name? Mario Mario and Luigi Mario

142

u/JaxMed Mar 29 '23

That's Mama Luigi to you

63

u/Scarnox Mar 29 '23

I hope she made lotsa SPAGHETTI!

20

Are we talking the old 80s version?

24

u/Stevie22wonder Mar 29 '23

Bob Hoskins one from 1993.

14

u/nodiaque Mar 29 '23

Yeah that one. I though I was the only one that liked it.

Yes it weirdly represent not much of Mario itself but I liked the movie.

8

u/Stevie22wonder Mar 29 '23

Oh yeah, it was super goofy, but I still love it.

You mean Mario Mario and Green Mario.

28

u/JSRambo Mar 29 '23

I'm pretty sure Shigeru Miyamoto himself officially confirmed this to be the case in an episode of Nintendo power, years ago

12

No it's obviously bros. Mario bros and Luigi bros.

123

u/MrBagooo Mar 29 '23

According to this logic Mario would be the family name as well. Since the games are called Mario Bros. But Mario's brother's name is clearly Luigi.

171

u/coin_return Mar 29 '23

Yeah, Miyamoto confirmed Mario's full name to be Mario Mario at the 30th anniversary festival in 2015. Luigi's last name was never confirmed, but can pretty safely be assumed that it is also Mario, so the "Mario Bros" is correct.

64

u/407145 Mar 29 '23 edited Mar 29 '23

Wasn’t it also in the movie? Found it https://youtu.be/EchwIoG9P2U?t=78s

38

u/J5892 Mar 29 '23

There are so many things in this movie I never noticed as a kid.
Like the cop has a woman just sitting on his desk massaging his back with her heel. And nobody even acknowledges it.

62

u/Bonesnapcall Mar 29 '23

A a kid, I was like, "Why are the cars sparking and need an overhead connection?"

Then somewhere in my 20's I saw a reddit post saying the Dino world in that movie has electric cars because there is no oil from extinct dinosaurs.

Does that mean Wario is Wario Wario? And Waluigi is Waluigi Wario?

41

u/Slicelker Mar 29 '23

Wario and Waluigi aren't brothers.

74

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '23

Waluigi took Wario's last name when they got married. I think it's sweet.

51

u/Simple-Wrangler-9909 Mar 29 '23 Silver

I thought they hyphenated it

Wario and Waluigi Rothstein-Chang

8

Wario Mario, their fathers are brothers. He's the cousin of Mario and Luigi.

4

u/HasselingTheHof Mar 29 '23

Unless Wario's father is Mario's mother's brother. Then they could have a completely different last name.

4

u/Happyberger Mar 29 '23

He's his father's brother's nephew's former roommate.

3

u/J5892 Mar 29 '23

So what does that make them?

Mario Mario and Luigi Mario. One site said Lakitu is the species name and they're all just types of Lakitus, but family name to me sounded cooler.

10

u/Glorious-gnoo Mar 29 '23

So his name could be Bob? Bob the Lakitu.

10

u/Stevie22wonder Mar 29 '23

Exactly. I bet they have a ceremony where they earn the right to name themselves, so there's gotta be a Mario the Lakitu out there who might just be his #1 fan.

I was going to say "this" like everyone else, but in addition to letting everyone I felt the same as your comment, I will also use this opportunity to say my balls smell like pickles.

"No, that sour"

The son/daughter not knowing the name of the video game character that their mother is cosplaying is the biggest role reversal of all time.

I would love lakitu more if he didn’t clap at me in Mario kart 8.

93

u/Revenge_of_the_Khaki Mar 29 '23

I would love him more if he was a little more fair in his placements. Sometimes he actually helps you and moves you WAY forward, and others he absolutely FUCKS you and costs you like 15 seconds.

88

u/offoutover Mar 29 '23

I would love Lakitu more if he would just let me be. Sometimes I just want to go explore the Donut Plains instead of race.

13

u/Whitealroker1 Mar 29 '23

22

u/cromulent_pseudonym Mar 29 '23

I remember it blew my mind when there was a part of the game where you could see him in a mirror behind Mario.

12

u/justcallmezach Mar 29 '23

I was perpetually pissed that you couldn't jump INTO the mirror for a level. 12 year old me spent a LOT of time in 1996 trying to figure out how to crack the code. Obviously, walking quietly in the hallway was part of it, along with running around the post in Tiny Huge Island.

Nope, just a dick wagging set piece with no purpose other than to pop off.

10

u/Ness-T Mar 29 '23

in Mario 64 DS that's how you unlock Wario actually, his painting is inside the mirror and you use the ability flower to turn invisible as Luigi to go into it. If you open the door inside the mirror you end up in a blank room with a star in it as well. Kinda a cool addition imo

5

u/justcallmezach Mar 29 '23

It had to be in response to the millions and millions upset over the original having no further meaning!

16

u/m0nkeybl1tz Mar 29 '23

What’s wild is I’m pretty sure he was included because 3D was so new, the idea of “controlling the camera” wasn’t even a concept people understood, so they added an actual camera person to help people contextualize it.

7

u/HippieDogeSmokes Mar 29 '23

It was also to explain why the camera was kinda bad.

10

u/MathMaddox Mar 29 '23

iIRC The developers thought it would be weird going to 3d so they figured it would help if players understood why you see him from 3rd person perspective.

5

u/i_sell_you_lies Mar 29 '23

That’s so bizarre since we’d never had his pov. As a side scroller you’re still 3rd person. Anywho, here’s wonderwall

When I was a kid we didn't know the names for a lot of the characters so my brother and I made up some of our own. We don't use any of them any more but the one that lasted longest was Lakitu's nickname. We called him "Bunkey".

19

u/Acrobatic_North_8009 Mar 28 '23

We called fire power spit balls because on NES it looked like he was spitting them out to me. I never thought twice about it until I played Mario with my now husband and he said, “um, he is clearly throwing them.” Tomato Tamato

6

u/mysticrudnin Mar 29 '23

i'm like 90% sure in super mario world they called him something like "cloud koopa"

3

u/apleasantpeninsula Mar 29 '23

well, it definitely was not. you can ask me because your comment made me read this shit) for the last hour, where you don’t even need to understand everything to go way too deep#Used_but_Hidden_Content). also,

Lakitu's internal name is "ship", suggesting that it originally rode on a ship instead of a cloud, or perhaps that it was a ship.

5

u/malice_clad Mar 29 '23

Growing up, my uncle called Birdo from Mario 2 "The Boogerchunker". Always stuck for me.

3

u/thehoney129 Mar 29 '23

While we’re on the subject; I found out the other day that Lakitu is his English name?? In Japanese he is Jugemu. So why is his English name so damn Japanese sounding? What is the word “lakitu” supposed to evoke for an English speaker?

(Yes, I know, “Lakitu” is technically not pronounceable in Japanese, at least not without some fairly non-standard subscripts. It would be ラキツ “lakitsu” or “rakitsu”. Still, the consonant-vowel structure sure looks like Japanese to this English speaker.)

3

u/Alcoraiden Mar 29 '23
