The son/daughter not knowing the name of the video game character that their mother is cosplaying is the biggest role reversal of all time.

Never really thought about it but he was a terror in Mario 1 but by the time Mario 64 rolls around he's like "eh fuck it I'll follow you with a camera"

I would love lakitu more if he didn’t clap at me in Mario kart 8.
93
u/Revenge_of_the_Khaki Mar 29 '23
I would love him more if he was a little more fair in his placements. Sometimes he actually helps you and moves you WAY forward, and others he absolutely FUCKS you and costs you like 15 seconds.
88
u/offoutover Mar 29 '23
I would love Lakitu more if he would just let me be. Sometimes I just want to go explore the Donut Plains instead of race.
13
u/Whitealroker1 Mar 29 '23
I find it equally disturbing and pleasing that in Mario Porn Lakitu is the cameraman.

Bro to be fair you either need reminding which way is forward or you're literally trying to break the game.

u/TimeTravelMishap Mar 28 '23
Bastard? He risked life and limb to film Mario in Mario 64!!
22
u/CoffeeJedi Mar 29 '23
But back in the 80s he threw Spinies at us! Spinies! And he floated up there at the top of the screen, so smug.

I remember it blew my mind when there was a part of the game where you could see him in a mirror behind Mario.
12
u/justcallmezach Mar 29 '23
I was perpetually pissed that you couldn't jump INTO the mirror for a level. 12 year old me spent a LOT of time in 1996 trying to figure out how to crack the code. Obviously, walking quietly in the hallway was part of it, along with running around the post in Tiny Huge Island.
Nope, just a dick wagging set piece with no purpose other than to pop off.
10
u/Ness-T Mar 29 '23
in Mario 64 DS that's how you unlock Wario actually, his painting is inside the mirror and you use the ability flower to turn invisible as Luigi to go into it. If you open the door inside the mirror you end up in a blank room with a star in it as well. Kinda a cool addition imo
5
u/justcallmezach Mar 29 '23
It had to be in response to the millions and millions upset over the original having no further meaning!
16
u/m0nkeybl1tz Mar 29 '23
What’s wild is I’m pretty sure he was included because 3D was so new, the idea of “controlling the camera” wasn’t even a concept people understood, so they added an actual camera person to help people contextualize it.
7
10
u/MathMaddox Mar 29 '23
iIRC The developers thought it would be weird going to 3d so they figured it would help if players understood why you see him from 3rd person perspective.
→ More replies5
u/i_sell_you_lies Mar 29 '23
That’s so bizarre since we’d never had his pov. As a side scroller you’re still 3rd person. Anywho, here’s wonderwall
7
u/Folcra Mar 29 '23
Do you control Mario, and Lakitu follows?
...or do you control Lakitu, while Mario runs in terror?
13
u/laineDdednaHdeR Mar 28 '23
He would also pull you from the depths in Mario Kart. Funny how he seems to switch teams so easily.

u/joshlamm Mar 29 '23
That just unlocked a deep memory of when I was a kid playing SMB, I heard some older kid refer to him as "Mr Cloudy" so that's what he was to me for years.
5
u/jk3us Mar 29 '23
I always thought it was a girl, because that sure does look like a bow in her hair instead of lakitu's eyes (the cloud also had a face, I didn't realize someone was riding the cloud)

u/dchavez8 Mar 28 '23
When I was a kid we didn't know the names for a lot of the characters so my brother and I made up some of our own. We don't use any of them any more but the one that lasted longest was Lakitu's nickname. We called him "Bunkey".
19
u/Acrobatic_North_8009 Mar 28 '23
We called fire power spit balls because on NES it looked like he was spitting them out to me. I never thought twice about it until I played Mario with my now husband and he said, “um, he is clearly throwing them.” Tomato Tamato
6
u/mysticrudnin Mar 29 '23
i'm like 90% sure in super mario world they called him something like "cloud koopa"
3
u/apleasantpeninsula Mar 29 '23
well, it definitely was not. you can ask me because your comment made me read this shit) for the last hour, where you don’t even need to understand everything to go way too deep#Used_but_Hidden_Content). also,
Lakitu's internal name is "ship", suggesting that it originally rode on a ship instead of a cloud, or perhaps that it was a ship.

Was she on the clock?
As the old saying goes: The Boss makes a dollar, I make a dime. That’s why I make Mario decorations on company time!

u/Lost-My-Mind- Mar 29 '23
I always went by "Boss makes a dollar, I make a penny, thats why fuck this, fuck him, fuck the customers except the polite ones, fuck the company, fuck you, fuck you, you're cool, fuck you, I'm out!"
Did I do it wrong?

While we’re on the subject; I found out the other day that Lakitu is his English name?? In Japanese he is Jugemu. So why is his English name so damn Japanese sounding? What is the word “lakitu” supposed to evoke for an English speaker?
(Yes, I know, “Lakitu” is technically not pronounceable in Japanese, at least not without some fairly non-standard subscripts. It would be ラキツ “lakitsu” or “rakitsu”. Still, the consonant-vowel structure sure looks like Japanese to this English speaker.)
